Terssa and Doug Markworth have twenty-one kids, some sharing their DNA, most not, but all are equally cherished. The tough times were not so dissimilar from those of a “normal” family. Terssa endured sibling rivalry, contrariness, calls from schools, curfews shattered, and hearts broken.
But she and Doug also experienced unconditional love and forgiveness, mutual trust and respect, and six sons playing and winning in the same State Championship football game. The challenges of life as part of that enormous family were multiplied, sometimes to the point of despairing as to whether they as parents were making a difference in anyone’s life, but so too were the uncountable joys.
Of course, people often asked, “How do you do it?” Whatever answer she offered—responses were calculated on a case-by-case basis, dependent on the perceived motivation of the questioner—in her head and heart, Terssa’s immediate answer was, “Grace and a good dose of Prayer!” Failing all else, she would ask herself, “Are you trying to please men or God?”
When the Lord returns, I want to be sitting at a table with my family surrounding me and all of us bowing our heads, saying grace, holding Doug’s hand and laughing about the years when everyone said “Your parents are crazy!” We will all be laughing saying “You can’t bungee jump with a pair of panty hose!”
